Welcome to the Van Wert Community Club

The Van Wert Community Club is all about the Community!  We are a non-profit service organization made up of volunteers who donate their time to support activities, fellowship, and goodwill in Van Wert and the surrounding area.  Membership is open to any person of good character over the age of 18.  Junior memberships are available to those under 18 which makes the VWC Club ideal for families to join and work together for the betterment of the community in which they live, work, and play.  Our members have many different interests and talents and enjoy the friendships and networking connections established through our projects and special events.  The Van Wert Community Club is a great way to get involved with your community.

Crab Races – Feb 22: Super Heroes

Join us on February 22 at VFW Post 5803 in Van Wert for the 3rd annual Hermit Crab Races.  This year’s theme is Super Heroes.

Doors will open at 6:00 for food and drink.  Racing begins at 7:00.   Admission is free and open to the public.

Place a bet on your favorite crab, then watch as he (or she) competes to be the first to make it across the finish line.  There are 12 races in all for the evening with 5  crabs in each race, so if your favorite doesn’t pay off on the first go ’round, try again or choose a new favorite for the next race.

For $5 you can name a crab during the races.  If you are present and your crab wins the race, you will double your money, winning $10.

The VFW Post is located at 111 N. Shannon Street.

Together We CAN Food Drive

School is out, which means school lunch and breakfast program meals are done for the summer.  Parents are providing more meals for their family which is leaving inventories low at food banks in Van Wert County.

The Van Wert Community Club is organizing “Together we CAN”, a canned food/non-perishables food drive to benefit our local food banks at Cooperative Ministries located at First United Methodist Church, Trinity Friends, Salvation Army, Convoy, and Ohio City.   We invite members of organizations, church groups, co-workers, and friends & families to participate and support this worthy cause.

There are many ways to participate and collection can even begin now:

1.)   Group Scavenger Hunt

2.)   Drop & Drive

3.)   Area Collection Bins

The Scavenger Hunt:

A scavenger hunt will be held on Sunday, July 28 between 2 and 4 p.m.   Home base will be the Commercial Building on the Van Wert County Fairgrounds.  Alternate start sites are the Methodist Church (changed from the Village Municipal Building) in Convoy and the Village Hall in Ohio City.  You do not have to pre-register and there is no fee to participate.  Items may be obtained in a number of ways –purchased, solicited through donation, or a combination of both — whatever method you choose.  The county will be divided into sections and your group’s team will be assigned an area to collect as many items as possible from a list provided by the food pantries.  Each item will be assigned a point value and the group with the highest total upon their return will be awarded a prize.  Remember, you can start collecting now to add to your scavenger bounty – the ultimate goal is to collect as much as possible for our local pantries.    Click on our Activities Page for Rules, List of Items/Tally Sheet, and Tips for a Successful hunt.

Drop & Drive:

For groups who do not wish to scavenger or are unable to, you can still participate in the food drive.  Collect your items ahead of time and simply drop them off along with your tally sheet on July 28th at the Commercial Building on the fairgrounds between 2 and 4 p.m.

Collection Bins:

Collection bins will be placed in participating grocery stores starting on July 1 to help raise awareness of the event and need for donations.  Shoppers are invited to donate as they do their weekly shopping.  COLECTION BINS ARE IN THESE AREA STORES:  Van Wert:  MainStreet Market, Pick N Save, Shoe Sensation.  Convoy: Secret Garden & the Village Municipal Building.  Ohio City:  Koating Concepts/Rent-A-Garage & the Village Hall.

Together We CAN:

We are certain you will find this to be a great experience serving others.  It is a great way to bring together members your club or church, friends and family for the benefit of the community in which you live and work.  It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors and the great feeling it brings helping those less fortunate.
